Do you need to see a psychologist?

People see a psychologist for many reasons. Sometimes the effects of a condition such as depression are debilitating, affecting one's ability to work. The simplest tasks seem impossible, relationships are affected, and the individual may feel completely overwhelmed and hopeless. At other times, a person may have issues that are not a disorder but may feel confused or stuck in life and may find it helpful to discuss it with someone who is objective. It is certainly not the case that only people who are mentally unwell benefit from seeing a health professional. You may feel that you are very happy with most aspects of your life but have an area in which you see some difficulties or in which you are not achieving as well as you would like. You may feel that it is now time to address these issues, and get some help to make changes.

Therapy

Eve uses primarily a cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) or Schema Therapy (ST) approach. They have both been shown in research to be effective for many problems. In both of them, the thinking patterns and behaviours which maintain a person's problems are addressed in order to bring about positive changes and reduce distress.

Both CBT and ST are structured, time-limited and active. To begin with, therapy is structured in order to achieve the best use of time. Goals are agreed upon, and during therapy Eve will work with her clients to achieve those goals. CBT and ST are active in that it is best for individuals undergoing therapy to take an active part in helping themselves in their life situations. Skills are learnt in sessions and it has been found that generally, the most benefit is derived from therapy when these skills are practiced between sessions. The extent to which clients do active work between sessions is a significant factor which affects the rate of progress in therapy.. The difference is that CBT treatment is usually a short-term therapy, usually requiring between 6 and 14 sessions, although this varies, whereas Schema Therapy is generally a medium or longer-term therapy. Schema Therapy shares many of the components of CBT but also incorporates experiential and interpersonal techniques.

A comprehensive assessment is conducted in the first session to gain a thorough understanding of the problem. This gives a client a chance to discuss what they would like to achieve or work on in therapy. While Eve primarily uses CBT or ST, her theraputic approach is also informed by other modalities, such as dialectical behaviour therapy, mindfulness and compassion-focussed therapy.

If your difficulties are beyond her areas of expertise, Eve will speak to you about other options for treatment.

If there are any questions about this type of therapy, please contact Eve on 0411 966 210 or send an email to

Fees

Currently, the standard rate recommended by the Australian Psychological Society is $300 (for an appointment between 45-60 minutes long). Eve's fees are lower than this, as it is important for her to provide a service that is accessible to most people. Please contact us to find out what her current fees are.

Eve is a registered Specialist Provider under Medicare's Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative. This means that if you are referred by your GP under this Scheme, you will receive a rebate of $136.35 per session from Medicare, for up to 10 sessions in a calendar year (1 January to 31 December). You will need to be assessed by your GP as having an eligible mental health problem, and receive a referral from your GP under the Better Access Scheme. Please ask your doctor for more information about this scheme or read this Medicare fact sheet. Some doctors require you book a long appointment for this assessment and referral.

Eve is registered with major private health funds. Many health funds will refund part of the fee for psychological services as long as you have a sufficient level of cover. There may be a limit on the amount claimed per year. Please contact your health fund to find out if you are covered for psychological services. You may wish to consider this option if you are not referred under the Medicare Scheme. Please note you cannot claim under your health fund if you are already receiving a rebate under the Medicare Scheme for a session.

Fees are paid by EFTPOS, credit card or direct deposit at the end of the appointment. Telehealth appointments are paid by direct deposit on the day of the appointment.

Appointments

To make an appointment, please call 0411 966 210. If you have to leave a message, your call will be returned as soon as possible, usually that day or by the next business day. You can also email eve at evebeh.clinpsych@gmail.com to enquire about booking an appointment.

Appointments are available at our clinic Making Connections Psychology, in St Peters, Tuesday to Friday.  Appointments are typically for 50 minutes. Most people find it helpful to have therapy sessions once a fortnight. The frequency will usually decrease towards the end of treatment.

At your first appointment, an assessment will be conducted. This means that the appointment will be mostly spent asking questions about your problems to get a clear understanding of what is troubling you. It is also often necessary to ask questions about other aspects of your life, in order to have a comprehensive view of your circumstances. Generally, the active part of therapy would begin after this session, in other words, from the second session onwards.

A GP's referral is not necessary to make an appointment. However, it may be useful, as your GP may be able to refer you to psychological services under the Medicare Scheme for mental disorders, if this is appropriate. The scheme provides for Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. Refer to the “Fees” section, or ask your doctor for more information about this scheme.
